US, Israel, and PA fail to reach deal to restart peace talks
Rapture Forum Staff: Chris
In the news today it is being reported that the US and Israel have failed to reach an agreement to halt so called settlement construction in an effort to resume peace talks with the Palestinian leadership. The Palestinians for their part have basically said that unless there was a total freeze on construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem that they would not return to the peace talks. Israel has so far refused to issue a second settlement freeze as the first one was merely a waste of time.
The announcement that the talks between the US and Israel had failed to reach an agreement was another blow to US President Obama. After losing control of the House of Representatives in the recent elections, foreign policy appeared to be the one area that he still controlled since the severe beating at the elections polls essentially destroyed his ability to further his domestic agenda.
But the recent developments showing that the US and Israel could not find a deal on the construction issue has essentially destroyed an prospects Obama had toward reaching a Middle East agreement between Israel and the PA. Israel's refusal to bow down to US and Palestinian pressure essentially means the peace talks will remain deadlocked with almost no chance of restarting them anytime soon.
The US administration appears to have been distracted from the foreign policy issue due to the recent election losses coupled with the recent WikiLeaks cable releases that have caused an outrage across the diplomatic world. It appears that the Middle East peace process will be put on the back burner for a while as more WikiLeaks reports continue to surface.
The release of the WikiLeaks documents will apparently give the Israelis some breathing room and reduce the pressure to cave into Palestinian demands. However, the Palestinians are resorting to Plan B by trying to get countries and the UN to recognize a Palestinian state along 1967 borders. This essentially allows the Palestinians to bypass the negotiation process and try to force a deal on Israel. This is a devious attempt to play hard ball with Israel in the anti-semitic UN. Israel has for their part warned that such actions will only make things worse.
At this point it looks like the Middle East peace process is deadlocked for the foreseeable future. This fact could lead to frustrations in the Islamic world that will lead us to the eventual fulfillments of Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17. The reasoning for this is that if the two sides are not sitting down talking, soon they will be up to arms in conflict. I would expect a resumption of rockets being fired into Israel and who knows what else as a result of the political stalemate.
One thing is for sure and that is that we need to continue to watch the region for any signs of a flare up. The timing for such a flare up is very good, in fact some major political leaders have been on record saying they expect a conflict before the end of the year if things didn't get worked out, While only time will tell for sure, we need to be watchmen on the wall and keep our focus on the apple of God's eye - Israel.
Please continue to pray for Israel and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Stay tuned!
