Abbas calls for full Palestinian membership in the UN

In a move that can be seen as a unilateral move and one designed to bypass the Middle East peace process, it is being reported today by the Jerusalem Post that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for Palestine to become an official member of the UN. This membership status would be based on 1967 borders which Israeli and Palestinian officials have not been able to agree on for a future Palestinian state. So as a result, it looks as though that the Palestinians are advancing their game plan by not holding direct negotiations with Israel and by bypassing the US who has acted as a mediator in the peace process. This is a crafty and smooth political move aimed to have a Palestinian state approved and recognized without having to negotiate with Israel. Yet this plan is surely to backfire as the only way a genuine peace plan can proceed is by direct negotiations. The Jerusalem Post news article reported:
The time has come for Palestine to become a permanent member of the United Nations, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday, reiterating his opposition to the idea of a state with temporary borders. He expressed hope that a Palestinian state on the 1967 lines would be declared by September and blamed Israel for the current stalemate in the peace process.
Abbas called on members of the Quartet to take measures that would “force Israel to end its aggression and occupation of our lands.” Abbas was speaking in Ramallah after meeting with visiting Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. Chile is one of a number of South American countries that have recognized a Palestinian state on the 1967 lines.
The Palestinians also rejected any idea of a plan that would involve a state based on "temporary borders" as they have rejected this in the past and declared that they would do so again. Essentially the Palestinians are saying it is our way or no way when it comes to negotiations which has been the motto of their direct talks with Israel. The Palestinians have made one ridiculous demand after another including the right of return of refugees, east Jerusalem as a capital, etc. all these things simply defeat the purpose of even having a Palestinian state if they are going to flood what is left of Israel with millions of so called "refugees" and then take over the most important part of the current Israeli capital. All of this has show that the Palestinians are in fact not a genuine peace partner, but simply out to grab anything and everything they can in the current negotiations without regard for the other side. While this is oftentimes common, it is not the path to true and lasting peace. The Jerusalem Post article went on to further report:
Abbas said that the time has come for a Palestinian state to become a permanent member of the UN, adding that the PA has completed building state institutions. He said he still hasn’t heard about Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s proposal for reaching an interim deal with the Palestinians that would include the establishment of a Palestinian state with temporary borders. However, he declared the PA’s refusal to such an idea. “We know of a proposal that was made in the past,” Abbas said. “If this proposal to establish a state with temporary borders is made again, we will reject it.”
Mohammed Shtayyeh, member of the PA negotiating team, claimed over the weekend that some members of the Quartet were trying to postpone the committee’s meeting, which is scheduled for mid-March, so as to give Netanyahu’s proposed plan a chance to succeed. “It’s sad that the meeting of the Quartet could be delayed in order to give Netanyahu a chance to present his plan,” Shtayyeh said.
As indicated by the news report Israeli PM Netanyahu is considering what is being described as a "bold and new" initiative to the Middle East process that he plans to unveil in the next few weeks, but before it can even be made known what the plan is the Palestinians have already started to reject it. The Palestinians are making one ridiculous demand after another and showing no flexibility on peacemaking. This is why I think the best thing Israel could do for right now is to suspend the Middle East peace talks and wait until the conditions on the ground have improved as there is simply too much instability in the Middle East for a peace deal to be worked out. But of course, the international community led by the US will not wait and as always can't "waste a good crisis" in trying to throw together a deal real quick regardless of what it entails. for this reason, I think the Israeli's should wait and delay any peace process moves until stability has been restored in the Middle East. It would be foolish to make a deal that worked against Israel if say the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power in Egypt. Then Israel would have not only Gaza to worry about but Egypt as well.
Abbas was also quick to reject any temporary borders of a Palestinian state instead of showing flexibility and concern for the Israeli side of things. Another news article today reports that Abbas has outright rejected any plans that call for temporary borders. Another Jerusalem Post news brief reports:
Palestinain Authority President Mahmoud Abbas rejected again any peace agreement with Israel that calls for a future Palestinian state in temporary borders, The Associated Press reported Saturday. Speaking in Ramallah, Abbas told the press that he has not yet been notified of a new plan that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was expected to announce in the coming weeks. Though Netanyahu has not revealed any details on the plan, Palestinian officials believe it will include provisional borders, thus allowing Israel to continue expanding settlements.
While the world continues to experience one chaotic event after another, and the Middle East region continues to suffer from instability and strife the world is showing more and more that we are in the last days and that we never know what tomorrow could bring in the region and in the world. This is exactly the kind of scenario painted by the Bible here in the last days. Wars, rumors of wars, unrest, nations with perplexity, etc. are just some of the things that we will continue to see as time goes on. Not only with the Middle East but with the world as a whole.
For these reasons we need to continue to watch out for new developments as they happen in the Middle East. The region is very unstable and the instability has been almost unparalleled for quite some time. I do believe that the unrests and protests that are sweeping the region could be prophetic in that they could help set up the establishment of terrorist organzations in states that were previously under rule by dictator regimes that kept some resemblance to peace with Israel intact. I believe that the unrests and protests will usher in more chaotic governments that will be more hostile towards Israel thus setting the stage for some end times prophecies that seem to be appearing over the horizon. With Iran sending naval warships through the Suez Canal for the first time in 30 years, it appears they are testing the waters and may have even made a delivery of arms to Syria that will ultimately fall into the hands of terrorist elements. This is definitely a time that we should be watching the region with great anticipation. Stay tuned!
