Russia & Turkey in the Last Days
By: Chris Schang
A frequent question students of Bible prophecy ask me is "What role does Russia and Turkey play in the last days?" To answer this question, we need to look at the coming Gog and Magog war of Ezekiel 38-39. It is here that Russia and Turkey are mentioned in Bible prophecy.
While the modern names of Russia and Turkey are not specifically mentioned, the names of these two countries are referred to by their "ancient" names of Magog and Togarmah. While there is considerable debate within the bible prophecy community over the ancient names and the present countries they occupy today, the bottom line in this prophecy is regardless of where you put the names in the region, the same main players are listed in Ezekiel 38-39. The main players in this prophecy are Russia, Turkey, and Iran (Persia).
As we can see right now in the current situation with Syria collapsing before our very eyes, things can change very quickly in this region. Right now, we can see Russia, Turkey, and Iran all involved militarily in the Syrian conflict. Earlier this year, I had wondered how Russia might get involved in the Middle East as their main "adventure" outside their border was the situation with Ukraine. Now, we suddenly find Russia inserting itself in Syria in a major way in an effort to prop up the failing regime of their ally Bashar Assad.
While the situation and outcome in Syria remains to be determined, from a prophetic perspective we can see that the three main players of Ezekiel 38-39 are all involved military-wise in a country on the border with Israel. I believe this is truly prophetic and something that we should continue to watch very closely. It is quite possible that somehow the fighting could expand towards Israel and lead to prophetic fulfillment of Ezekiel 38-39. Whether that fulfillment is sooner or later remains to be seen, but it will indeed be fulfilled as the Word of God says. And without a doubt Russia, Turkey, and Iran will be right there in the middle of it all.
The Bible mentions that Russia is led down toward Israel by "hooks in the jaws" with aims to invade Israel to "take a spoil". Turkey and Iran on the other hand are probably more likely to be interested in the destruction of Israel for Islam rather than for monetary gain. With Israel recently discovering vast amounts of oil and natural gas within their borders and sea boundaries, this places Israel right in the middle of Russia's bread and butter "economic income" gunsights. Russia's biggest source of income is from the sale of oil and natural gas, especially to Europe. Israel's discoveries are a threat to that income source and it also makes Israel an attractive alternative to the Europeans as opposed to the unreliable Russians.
So, after looking at all of this we can definitely see that Russia and Turkey will be involved in the last days as well as being part of a coalition of enemies that tries to invade Israel. This coalition is stopped in the mountains of Israel by none other than God himself. With his classic weapons of fire, brimstone, and hail stones the invading forces will meet their defeat. Israel will be saved for the day and their eyes will once again be opened to God. The Ezekiel 38-39 war is a pretribulational event and means that currently mostly secular Israel will return to the God of their fathers once again. It will not be until the Second Coming that Israel as a whole will recognize their Messiah in Jesus Christ.
I hope this article has provided you with some information to help you understand the role of Russia and Turkey in the last days. I would like to encourage you to continue focusing on the Middle East and especially Israel as they are God's prophetic timepiece.
